Hdrshop 3 0: A Professional and Extensible Image Processing System for HDR Images

if i had to do this in maya using mental ray, i would have just used a spherical lens and rendered floating point and been done with it. is there any advantage to rendering in multiple exposures and combining in hdrshop? i thought this was just a method to get 8 bit images into floating point.
